Hidden Benefits of Working with a Self-Pay Counselor
When someone first decides to see a counselor they often spend lots of time researching potential counselors to figure out who will be the best fit for them. They visit websites and read bios, to really get a feel for the counselor before ever reaching out.
Clients usually ask themselves a lot of questions about a potential counselor, but some of the biggest questions are “does this counselor get me?” and “do I believe this counselor can help me solve my problems?”
These are great questions to reflect on and it’s obviously very important that you feel a connection with the counselor you choose to work with. But the specific counselor you choose is only part of the equation to a successful counseling experience.
What’s the other part of the equation?
You.
It’s not just about whether you show up, it’s also about HOW you show up.
And one of the factors that can influence how you show up is the type of counseling experience you choose.
The reality is that some clients will get more out of their counseling journey than others. It doesn’t mean that they have less problems to work through, it’s more often about the fact that they show up differently.
So as you reflect on who is the best fit counselor for you, I want you to also reflect on this question:
Would seeing a self-pay counselor make the most sense for me?
Self-pay counselors (like me) are counselors that choose not to work directly with insurance companies. We most often make this decision so that we can focus more heavily on our client work without the limitations or administrative burdens that working with insurance companies often impose.
In a world where using insurance is common, clients often wonder to themselves “why would I choose to work with a self-pay counselor when I can see someone that accepts my insurance?”
That really is a great question, so let’s look at some of the reasons why a client might make the choice to see a self-pay counselor even if they do have insurance.
Choosing to work with a self-pay counselor has some obvious benefits as it pertains to your privacy. There is no permanent medical record created and no diagnosis is required.
No insurance company is dictating the number of sessions or imposing limits on treatment. This allows you to move at your own pace and allows us to do deep level work without restrictions.
This also gives me more flexibility in how I can help you. As a trained Reiki Master (energy healer), I am very in tune with your energy and where you may be experiencing blockages caused by unprocessed emotions. Being able to incorporate this skill allows me to walk you through processing your old emotions. When I can help you clear out the energy of the old, it gives the space you need to create the version of yourself that you’ve been dreaming of ✨
For some clients, these reasons alone are enough. But if you're still on the fence, here are a few more things to consider that impact how you show up.
We live in a society that is dominated by money. There isn’t a single day that passes that we don’t spend money or use something that was bought with money. It’s inescapable.
Because of our current society, our brains have been wired to often see things that come with an increased price tag to have an increased value.
We also know that our thoughts and beliefs shape how we experience this reality. What we expect to happen is often what does happen because that’s what we have wired ourselves to be attuned to.
So how does that apply to choosing a self-pay counselor?
Generally, people will not make high level investments into anything if they don't expect there to be some form of payoff. When they make the decision to make a larger investment into their mental health they are also making a fuller commitment to the process.
This commitment changes how they show up in the counseling space. They show up more invested (mentally & energetically), more ready & willing to do the hard work, and more dedicated to their goals & the transformation they are striving for.
Real change doesn’t happen unless we change who we are being at a subconscious level. And making the decision to work with a self-pay counselor starts shifting things in your subconscious before you’ve even set foot in the counselor’s office!
One of the biggest shifts that happens with this decision is that you send a clear message to yourself: you are valuable. Again, we don’t invest in things that we don’t think are worth it and so you’re showing yourself that you, your well being, and your mental health ARE important and worth the investment.
We also take better care of things that we consider to be more valuable. When you believe you are valuable, how you treat yourself starts to change. You give yourself a few extra minutes to breathe before diving into your next task. You talk to yourself more gently. Your inner critic becomes your inner cheerleader.
These shifts do wonders for self-esteem!
